Salary: $87,000 - 100,008 per year Requirements:
- We require a bachelors degree in informatics, computer science, management information systems, or a related technical discipline.
- We require at least two years of web application development experience using PHP, JavaScript, or another object-oriented language.
- We look for professional experience with web frameworks and current versions of PHP, JavaScript, and MySQL, along with a strong command of HTML, CSS, and web standards.
- We value experience working on command-line Linux systems and using revision control tools such as Git.
- We expect solid knowledge of web stacks, including installation, support, troubleshooting, security, deployment, and performance monitoring.
- We seek familiarity with RESTful web services, JavaScript frameworks, and cross-browser or cross-platform compatibility.
- We value understanding of usability practices, UI design, and accessibility standards, including Section 508.
- We need someone who can deliver work on schedule, follow specifications, and stay organized with strong attention to detail and sound coding principles such as SOLID, DRY, and encapsulation.
- We expect strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- We look for the ability to work independently and collaboratively, with demonstrated success working with diverse communities.
- Preferred experience includes Laravel or another MVC framework such as Symfony, Django, or Rails.
- Preferred experience includes NPM, NodeJS, and build tools such as webpack or Vite.
- Preferred experience includes extending a CMS, with Drupal experience especially valued.
- Preferred experience includes designing database schemas for complex data structures.
- Preferred experience includes a strong grounding in usability and accessibility principles.
- Preferred experience includes Docker, Docker Compose, and Docker Swarm or Kubernetes clusters.
- Preferred experience includes broad exposure to deploying and managing different server types.
Responsibilities: - We design, build, and maintain full-stack web applications and custom integrations between our systems and third-party platforms.
- We develop and enhance public-facing pages and user interfaces in Drupal, including custom modules, themes, and configurations, to support marketing, communications, and outreach.
- We architect and manage database schemas, application environments, and CI/CD pipelines using Docker and GitHub Actions to support scalable and dependable deployments.
- We improve code quality through code reviews, refactoring, and automated testing, including functional and unit tests.
- We ensure applications meet security, encryption, and access control standards while monitoring performance and logs to protect reliability and uptime.
- We collaborate on deployment, scalability, and resilience for our web application stack, including cloud infrastructure, backups, and disaster recovery planning.
- We produce clear technical documentation, such as data flow diagrams, process models, and system documentation, from project start through completion.
- We evaluate and apply LLMs and generative AI tools to speed development, strengthen code quality, and identify efficiency opportunities.
- We lead projects through the full lifecycle, from discovery and build to maintenance, optimization, and retirement.
- We partner with the Web Development Technical Manager and stakeholders to gather requirements, define scope, propose timelines, and prepare technical specifications.
- We translate complex requests into practical development plans for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- We create training materials and user support resources and help teams through system transitions with a thoughtful change management approach.
- We contribute to cross-functional meetings, school-wide committees, and university initiatives.
- We pursue ongoing professional development to stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in web development.

We are the University of Washington Information School IT department, and this role reports to our Web Development Technical Manager. Our work supports the Information Schools systems, public-facing sites, and digital infrastructure, and the position can be fully remote with no on-site requirement; if the employee is based in the Seattle area, occasional in-person attendance for certain meetings and events is strongly encouraged. Our environment includes Microsoft Azure, Docker Hub, Kubernetes, GitHub, GitHub Projects, GitHub Workflows, MySQL, Laravel, Drupal, JavaScript, and HAProxy. We offer a regular full-time position with a first-shift schedule and an annual pay range of $87,000 to $100,008.
